"Why don't you come and sit in on a meeting at my office this morning." Little did I know that those simple, mundane words uttered by my husband four years ago re: an appointment he had with Jim Tusty, would be the beginning of not just a new translation assignment related to the above film, but a very personal journey through time and history. One that would vividly bring to life events that had impacted my family for more than half a century in a way that no recounting of family memories, history book or Estonian school lecture ever could. For the first time, I didn't just read about those distant past events from some dog-eared text or carefully worded letter from behind the Iron Curtain...basically listening second hand to someone else describe their experiences. This time, I actually saw history happen right before my eyes through some incredible film footage gathered for the aforementioned documentary and often originally captured at great risk to the cameraman. I had expected a relatively straight forward translation assignment. What I got was a history lesson I'll never forget!
